I would not say that suffering is the defining factor of my experience but so often it seems to dominate the discussion around trans/nonbinary lives. Dysphoria, loss, loneliness, and bigotry all eat at me, yes. Sometimes they hang over my life like an endless cloud and frequently require space to safely be processed.

But I don't want these things to define my life, especially when joy has had just as palpable a presence during my transition, if not more so. I feel such peace in not having to hide anymore, euphoria in the intimate self-knowledge and -confidence I've gained, love - relearned and unbridled - blooming in magnificent forms, and resilience - hard-won but ironclad - amongst many other lovely things I am discovering along the way.

Queerness is marked by suffering but that doesn't mean we should let it take up the most space in our lives. The compassion, strength, and beauty we exude is an act of resistance in itself against a hatred that says more about the confusion and insecurity of the people who cast it than it does about us.

I have learned from suffering and I'm sure I will continue to but the kaleidoscopic moments of euphoria my transition and chosen family have brought me are the reason I am still alive and the reason that this project could exist in the first place.
